Millennia in a gesture. Ceramics beyond time
Domus Talks – “Millennia in a gesture. Ceramics beyond time” at Energieker Spazio Brera in Milan
On November 4, 2025, Energieker Spazio Brera in Milan hosted a new edition of Domus Talks, organized by Domus in collaboration with Energieker.
The discussion explored ceramics as a material that bridges past and future, between craftsmanship and technological innovation. Throughout the event, several speakers examined the evolution of porcelain stoneware, highlighting its aesthetic value and sustainability, and offering different perspectives on how ceramics continue to engage with contemporary design.
Architect and historian Enrico Morteo retraced the development of porcelain stoneware from the post-war years to today. By the 1980s and 1990s, the material had evolved from a functional alternative to an independent design choice, appreciated for its expressive potential. Giovanni Sanna, architect and partner at a-fact architecture factory, reflected on innovation and sustainability. Thanks to advanced production technologies, porcelain stoneware has become a sustainable material that frees architecture from design constraints, opening new creative possibilities. Giulia Monti, Global Contract & Key Account Manager at Energieker, shared the company’s journey, from its early focus on double-firing and red-body ceramics to today’s industrial production of large slabs. She described how porcelain stoneware now spans every design dimension: floors, walls, ventilated facades, furniture, and countertops, paving the way for further exploration of three-dimensional and material experimentation.
The talk was moderated by Simona Bordone, Head of the Domus Archive and Special Projects, who guided an open dialogue between the speakers and the audience. The Milan event reaffirmed that ceramics today represent an evolving design language, one that merges memory, innovation, and sustainability.
